LOWER WAPSIPINICON
RIVER CLEANUP PROJECT

A grassroots effort bringing together volunteers and sponsors to clean the Lower Wapsipinicon River and backwaters in an effort to make the public aware of this precious natural resource.

Over the last 4 years 23.6 tons of trash removed from 72 miles of river and backwaters with an average of 52% recycled!

2010 CLEANUP - AUGUST 13-15, 2010

Come join us for our fifth year on this unique river cleanup with a twist! This is an annual camping and canoe-based cleanup working on a different sections of the Lower Wapsipinicon River between Anamosa and the Mississippi River.

We will be covering the beginning 23 mile stretch of the Lower Wapsipinicon River covering Anamosa Access to Jungletown Access (Hale).

The Friday night stay is optional. The cleanup will begin early Saturday morning and end Sunday afternoon. Single-day participation is permitted. Participants will remove pop cans, plastic sacks, tires, barrels and other pieces of trash they find in the river's waters and banks. Participants should dress for the weather, bring work gloves and wear closed-toe shoes. PFDs are required to be worn at all times while on the river. Organizers will provide free camping (including shower facilities), and canoes, paddles and PFDs for those who need them. Catered meals and t-shirts are available for purchase. The Jones County Conservation Board naturalist will offer some interesting, fun, and free evening environmental education programs.

Camp will be based at Central Park near Center Junction, Iowa. Primitive camping will be free of charge courtesy of our hosts Jones County Conservation Board. This park is located two miles west of Center Junction, and is the home of the historic Bowstring Bridge. There is a 25-acre lake and the park features a Nature Center, swimming, fishing and numerous nature trails are available. Other features include pavilions for rent, fishing, trolling motor boating, paddle boating and canoeing. There is a fully modernized shower house facility with running water, showers, toilets, and sinks located in the modern camping area.

If you don't wish to utilize the free primitive camping the semi-modern, and fully modern sites are first come first serve. Prices are as follows: Electrical sites $12, Semi-Modern $14, and full hook up sites $16 per night.

The Lower Wapsipinicon River Cleanup Project is a grassroots organization with a twofold purpose: To remove trash from the river and dispose of it in an environmentally responsible manner; and to educate the public about the environment and the importance of caring for natural resources.

A limited number of canoes, paddles, and orange "keyhole" PFDs will be provided free for those who don't have or don't want to use their own. PFDs are required to be worn at all times while participants are on the river.
